Ever wondered why after long streak of good skin you might suddenly breakout with spot friends who hang around long enough to be introduced to your friends. Well, when was the last time you had a makeup clear out?

On more and more of our makeup there’s a little symbol of an opened jar with a number in it follower by M for Month giving us a guideline on when to trash or stash.

As upsetting as it is throwing out make up, bacterial contamination is even more upsetting. So just in case you don’t see it on your makeup or packaging here’s my quick & simple guide to when to trash or stash your make up.

3-6 Months

Mascara

If it starts to smell iffy and looks different and feels clumpy on your lashes, get rid of it.

STOP pumping that mascara, as it forces air into the tube and dries it out, STOP sharing mascara as its guaranteed to spread germs and DON’T try to add water.

Liquid Eyeliner

Just like mascara liquid eyeliners are water based so open to bacteria contamination. Prolong the life of your liquid liner by making sure you keep the lid shut tight.

Make-up Sponges / Beauty Blender

Anything that’s always touching your face needs TLC. Wash these once a week with a bit of fairy liquid to prevent upsetting your skin.

12-18 months

Foundation / Concealer

If it’s split into layers or changed colour, get rid, and keep it away from direct sunlight as UV rays damage the preservatives.

Eye, Lip & Brow Pencils

As these all get sharpened as we use them it helps to keep the germs away and help them last longer. If you love a steamy shower, your pencils don’t, so keep them out of the bathroom.

Lipgloss

Just like mascara DON’T pump your Lipgloss. Again, if it’s changed colour, smells different or super sticky.

18-24 months

Powder based makeup (Eyeshadow, blusher, bronzer etc.)

Don’t rush out leaving them open on the side, letting excess air into them means they’ll get dry and flaky super quick. You may notice a darker cast across the top of your powders if it’s been in contact with anything wet, lightly scrape the top layer to expose the powder under

Moisturiser

Moisturisers with a pump last longer that one’s in a jar, as it’s less prone to airborne bacteria.

Lipstick

Smells different, not sticking to your lips, small bubbles on the lipstick, time to go lipstick shopping.

There’s no point having a growing makeup collection with bits that are well past their shelve life. Plus when has having to go beauty shopping been a bad thing. So, go on go sort out your trash or stash pile.
