What Lupita Nyong’o's Vogue Cover means.

For the second October in a row, my girl crush that is Lupita Nyong'o has adorned the front cover of American Vogue.

Lupita Ndongo Fall 2016 Cover

Her elegant and naturally defined beauty is one that redefines the meaning of 'beauty' often portrayed on the covers of glossy magazines such as Vogue. Such as her role in the upcoming new movie, Queen of Katwe, Lupita Nyong’o continues to grow in her understanding of a world where she can truly define her character and not let her roles strip her of her roots and knowledge of self.

For me, the significance of Lupita on the October issue lies in the season. Now, forget berry lips, tan boots and copper eyes, Autumn is traditionally seen as a period of change. The months when we have equally as much light as we do dark. However, often through so many different portrayals in life, we often prefer the light to the dark, but slowly and slowly through the slowing of the relentless chasing of perfection, a lot of us are developing a greater understanding of how light and dark have to work together to create a balance.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that I'm talking about being black or white, Yes! as a black woman I feel totally empowered to see Lupita's on the front cover, in what I can only describe as beauty in an unadulterated natural manner, but I also think this cover tells the beautiful story of the coming of a picturesque season.

When we think about natures' changes during autumn, we grow more appreciative of all the different types of beauty that surrounds us. A season where little pieces of light allows a growth from within, giving us the opportunity to fall in love with ourselves and embrace all the changes we've been through, during the year. So to me, this cover screams, Be the change you want to see.

I know I sometimes write a little deep, but that's just me but just like beauty is unique, so are perspectives, so for you deep thinkers out there what are your thoughts on this cover?

Issue Out September 21st
