My One and Only Inspiration for the BIG CHOP.

It’s not just because my Instagram and Pintrest pages are full of Queens who’ve taken the plunge to instant hair freedom or because Lupita Nyong'o rocks a mean Teeny Weeny Afro (TWA), it’s because of ‘her’. If you’ve read my ‘about me’ section you’ll know exactly who I’m talking about. Her name is Mayah and she’s my 1 year-old beauty, adorned in the most amazing Afro (Yes it’s that big I had to write afro with a capital A).

Before I gave birth to Mayah, the one prayer I had was that I would always be an inspiration to her, so that she grows up accepting her beauty in a world that still has a mass of questionable amounts of sterotypes as to accepted standards of beauty. As mums, sisters, cousins, girlfriends and most importantly as Queens, the change starts with us. We need to be inspired by our natural Young Queens for us to truly be an authentic source of inspiration.

When I look at Mayah, a see a Young Queen, who thinks she is a total girl boss, who because she has not had anyone tell her she’s not worthy, she’s not beautiful or she can’t do it, she knows and sees no limits and just naturally accepts the way she is.

So when I come back from spin class on a Saturday morning, her dad has taken her hair out of braids, parted it into 4 sections for me, I throw on an old t-shirt and I run my hands through her fro, ready to wash and care for her hair,

I have that ‘moment’. That moment when I also run my hands through my now wet from sweat, chemically treated hair and feel a mix of hair textures and wonder when next I'm due to lovingly (NOT) drench my hair and scalp in the harsh alkaline chemicals in relaxer to stop my hair from being everything it is meant to be.

So 2 weeks ago I asked myself,

Am I ABLE to spend more time on my hair?

Will I ACCEPT my texture and not do everything on my natural hair journey to beat my natural texture?

Am I READY TO CARE about what type of products I put in my hair.

Am I PREPARED to fully EMBRACE my natural God- given hair despite outdated myths about black hair.

Well YES!! I am ABLE to ACCEPT and PREPARED to EMBRACE the future health of my Hair and my Heart.

Have you recently had the BC or thinking about doing it, what was your inspiration was and how’s it going?

Check back next week Monday for my BC REVEAL.

Mamamayah.
